What Does Black Tie Optional Mean?

So, you just opened a fancy engraved invitation to your friend’s wedding, but you can’t help but let out a little groan when you notice “Black Tie Optional” inscribed on the bottom corner. Nothing is seemingly more vague, amiright? I mean, how fancy is it, exactly? Am I supposed to wear a full length gown? Does my date have to wear a tuxedo?

Traditionally, “Black Tie” indicates that men are expected to wear tuxedos and women are expected to wear their fanciest floor-length dress. When picking out your outfit, remember to keep the bride and groom in mind! If they want more of a fun party, you might have a bit more freedom to get creative with your outfit. If they are more traditional, you better stick to the tux and floor-length dress.

So now to “Black Tie Optional” — what exactly does that mean? This one is actually a little more straightforward than you think. It simply means that it is a slightly less strict dress code. Men can choose to wear a tux, but it is not required. If they choose not to, they should wear a formal suit and tie, in a dark color (like navy, dark grey or black). Women can choose to get all gussied-up in their full length gowns, or they can choose to wear a dressy suit or a modest cocktail dress in a dark color.
